What Is EPUB?

EPUB is an open, international standard for ebooks. It's supported by virtually every ebook reader, app, and platform except Amazon Kindle (although Kindle has been adding EPUB support recently). EPUB files use HTML and CSS internally, making them flexible and capable of reflowing text to fit any screen size. Learn more in our complete guide to EPUB format.

What Is MOBI?

MOBI is a proprietary ebook format originally created by Mobipocket and later acquired by Amazon for use with Kindle devices. It's essentially Amazon's legacy format, now being replaced by newer formats like KF8 (AZW3). MOBI files are primarily used by Kindle users and have limited support outside the Amazon ecosystem. Key Differences Between MOBI and EPUB

Compatibility: EPUB is universally supported across Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Nook, and most third-party reading apps. MOBI is mainly supported on Amazon Kindle devices and apps. If you're not reading on a Kindle, EPUB is almost always the better choice.

File size: EPUB files are typically smaller because the format uses more efficient compression. MOBI files tend to be larger, especially for image-heavy books.

Features: EPUB 3 supports advanced features like audio, video, interactive content, and better typography. MOBI is limited to basic text formatting and simple images.

Future-proofing: EPUB is actively maintained and updated. MOBI is a legacy format that Amazon itself is moving away from in favor of KF8/AZW3. Amazon even stopped accepting MOBI files for new Kindle Direct Publishing uploads in 2022.

MOBI vs EPUB: Which Should You Use?

How to Convert Between MOBI and EPUB (or PDF)

If you have a MOBI file and need it in a more universal format, the easiest solution is to convert it to PDF. With CheersPDF, you can convert MOBI to PDF instantly in your browser — free, private, and with no file upload. You can also convert EPUB to PDF using the same tool.

For converting MOBI to EPUB (or vice versa), you'll need a desktop tool like Calibre, which supports both formats and can convert between them. Note that DRM-protected files cannot be converted.

Verdict: EPUB Wins for Most Users

Unless you're locked into the Amazon Kindle ecosystem with older devices, EPUB is the better format. It's more widely supported, more feature-rich, and actively maintained. MOBI is a legacy format that's being phased out even by Amazon.

And when you need maximum compatibility across all devices and platforms, PDF remains the most universal document format.
