MOBI File Not Opening? Quick Troubleshooting Guide

Can't open a MOBI file? Whether your reader shows an error, the file appears corrupted, or your device just doesn't recognize it — here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

1. Your App or Device Doesn't Support MOBI

This is the most common reason a MOBI file won't open. Not every reading app supports MOBI files. Apple Books, Google Play Books, and most built-in e-reader apps don't support MOBI format at all.

Fix:

2. The File Is DRM-Protected

If the MOBI file was purchased from a store, it may have DRM (Digital Rights Management) that prevents it from opening on unauthorized devices or apps. DRM-protected MOBI files only work with the specific Kindle account they were purchased on.

Fix:

3. The File Is Corrupted

If a MOBI file was partially downloaded, transferred incorrectly, or stored on failing media, it may be corrupted.

Fix:

4. It's Actually Not a MOBI File

Sometimes files are mislabeled. A file with a .mobi extension might actually be an AZW3, KFX, or even a renamed EPUB file.

Fix:

5. Your Kindle App Is Outdated

Older versions of the Kindle app may not handle all MOBI files correctly, especially those with newer formatting features.

Fix: Update the Kindle app to the latest version from your device's app store.

6. The File Extension Is Wrong

If the file has no extension or the wrong extension, your device won't know how to open it.

Fix: Make sure the file ends with .mobi. If it has no extension, try adding .mobi to the filename. If that doesn't work, try .azw or .prc.

The Universal Fix: Convert to PDF

If nothing else works, converting the MOBI file to PDF is the most reliable solution. PDF files open on every device, in every browser, and in every operating system.

  1. Go to cheerspdf.com/mobi-to-pdf
  2. Drop your MOBI file onto the page
  3. Download the PDF and open it anywhere

The conversion is free, private (your file stays on your device), and takes just seconds. For more about MOBI format, see our MOBI format guide.
