How to Convert AZW and AZW3 Kindle Files to PDF for Free

AZW vs AZW3: What's the Difference?
Amazon uses several proprietary ebook formats. Here's a quick breakdown:

AZW is essentially a MOBI file with Amazon's DRM wrapper. AZW3 (also called KF8) is a more modern format based on HTML5/CSS3, similar to EPUB but with Amazon's DRM. For more details, see our complete Kindle format comparison.
The DRM Problem
Most AZW and AZW3 files purchased from Amazon's Kindle Store are protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management). DRM-protected files cannot be converted to PDF by any legitimate converter. This is a legal restriction, not a technical limitation.
You can only convert AZW/AZW3 files that are DRM-free. These include:
- Books from DRM-free publishers or authors
- Free Kindle books that happen to be DRM-free
- Personal documents you sent to your Kindle via email
- Files created with Kindle publishing tools for preview purposes

How to Convert DRM-Free AZW/AZW3 to PDF
Method 1: Convert MOBI-Based AZW via CheersPDF
Since AZW files are based on the MOBI format, DRM-free AZW files can often be converted using CheersPDF's MOBI to PDF converter. Simply rename the file extension from .azw to .mobi and use the converter.
- Rename your file:
book.azw→book.mobi - Open cheerspdf.com/mobi-to-pdf
- Drop the renamed file and download your PDF
Note: This works best for older AZW files. AZW3/KF8 files have a different internal structure and may not convert this way.
Method 2: Use Calibre for AZW3/KF8
For AZW3 files, Calibre is currently the best free option. It natively supports AZW3 import and can convert to PDF with customizable output settings.
- Download and install Calibre
- Add your AZW3 file to the library
- Right-click → Convert → PDF
- Adjust output settings if needed and click OK

How to Check if Your File Has DRM
- Purchased from Amazon? — Almost certainly has DRM
- Downloaded from Project Gutenberg, Smashwords, or similar? — Usually DRM-free
- Sent to your Kindle as a personal document? — DRM-free
- Try opening it in Calibre — if Calibre says "DRM," you can't convert it
What About KFX Files?
KFX is Amazon's newest format, used for books downloaded on newer Kindle devices and apps. KFX files always have DRM and are not supported by most conversion tools. Currently, there is no reliable free method to convert DRM-protected KFX files to PDF.
