What Is MOBI?
MOBI was originally created by the French company Mobipocket before Amazon acquired it in 2005. It became the standard format for Kindle devices for over a decade. What Is AZW?
AZW is Amazon's proprietary format based on MOBI but with added DRM encryption. When you buy a book from the Kindle Store, you typically receive an AZW file. AZW files are essentially MOBI files wrapped with Amazon's DRM, which means they can only be opened on authorized Kindle devices and apps.
What Is AZW3 (Kindle Format 8)?
AZW3, also known as KF8 (Kindle Format 8), is Amazon's current ebook format. It's a major upgrade over MOBI/AZW, supporting HTML5, CSS3, embedded fonts, SVG graphics, and better typography. Most books purchased from the Kindle Store today are delivered in AZW3 format. Like AZW, it typically includes Amazon's DRM protection.
How Do They Compare to EPUB?
